What is Asthma?
A chronic lung condition caused by the inflammation of the airway is known as asthma. The airways are obstructed by abnormal swelling, which leaves less room for air to move in and out, creating less oxygen exchange in the body.
Some asthma sufferers only experience mild symptoms, while others have a form of asthma that could become life threatening quickly. An asthma attack represents can involve coughing, shortness of breath and the inability to obtain enough air. The most severe symptoms require immediate treatment and sometimes emergency services.
Research is inconclusive of the exact cause of asthma, but some scientists believe it may be a combination of environmental factors and genetics. Often, allergies are linked to asthma, but not all who suffer from allergies develop asthma.
What is COPD?
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also abbreviated COPD, is another obstructive lung condition causing wheezing, cough and shortness of breath. It comes in the form of bronchitis or emphysema. Bronchitis involves inflammation of the bronchial tubes and may wax and wane. Bronchitis can be a chronic component of COPD. It comes with labored breathing, coughing, and heavy mucus production.
Emphysema occurs when the small air sacs or alveoli of the lungs become damaged. This damage causes a larger space in the lungs and reduces the surface area making it harder for oxygen molecules to enter the bloodstream.
It’s common for those with COPD to suffer from both emphysema and bronchitis.
