What is Blood Work?

Also known as a blood test, blood work is a blood analysis done after blood is drawn from a peripheral vein. With a blood analysis, it’s possible to check for biochemical and physiological conditions, along with check for proper organ function.

Patients can be better cared for and treated due to the results of blood work. Blood testing is a routine procedure, usually completed as a part of an annual physical. You may also need to have your blood tested if you or your physician suspects an illness or an infection, which may be diagnosed through a blood analysis.

What will a Blood Test Include?

When Dr. Brinley orders a blood test, you can expect a butterfly needle (small needle) to be used to draw blood from one of your small veins. A small pinch may be felt when performing the procedure.

Your physician may ask you to fast for 12 hours prior to a blood draw. However, once your blood has been drawn, no downtime is necessary.

What types of tests can be ordered from a Blood Draw?

Blood may be tested for several things and physicians use blood testing to diagnose and eliminate certain possibilities. Some of the types of tests commonly ordered from a blood draw include:

  • Immune function
  • Pregnancy
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Diabetes
  • STDs
  • Hormone deficiencies
  • Cholesterol
  • Prostate Status
  • Organ health
  • Cancer
  • Infection

Sometimes, a blood draw is used to confirm a diagnosis, while other times it can be used to eliminate possibilities. Routine blood work should be completed as a part of an annual physical, as well.

What may be diagnosed with Blood Testing?

A blood test may help your physician diagnose several things, such as:

  • Vitamin D levels
  • Vitamin B12 levels
  • Hormone Panel
  • Testosterone levels
  • Mineral and Electrolyte levels
  • Folic acid levels
